How to reboot Nighthawk R7000P remotely
I have a Nighthawk R7000P router hooked to a cable modem which routinely crashes (about once a month), and my security cameras are dependent on the router . Re-setting it when I'm home just requires ...
- Nov 14, 2023The Keep Connect smart plug completely solved the issue. It senses any interruption and reboots until the connection is reestablished. You can also monitor the status of the KC plug via internet and use multiple KC plugs for a more complex network.

What is that cable modem. What happens when it – modem or router? – crashes?
A number is more useful than "the latest". (It may not be by the time people read this.) There can also be newer versions, or "hot fixes", that do not show up if you check for new firmware in the browser interface.
It might also help if you told people what the modem is in front of this router, if there is one. The make and model number could be useful. Is it, by any chance, also a router, with a set of LAN ports on the back?
The reason for asking is that a lot of people turn up here trying to put a router behind a modem that is also a router. That can complicate troubleshooting.
Re-setting it when I'm home just requires unplugging for 30 seconds, but the problem is I'm away from home for 50% of the time. There seems to be no way to re-boot the router remotely. The "anywhere access" feature is unavailable when the router is "down, " and the Nighthawk App just tells me it can't connect. Does anyone have a solution? I'm on the verge of just throwing the router away and getting a more reliable one.
By resetting, do you mean "factory reset" or reboot (power on/off)?

The R7000P is now pretty ancient, from 2017, and was never the most capable box around.

The cable modem is a recent model provided by Altice. Not home now so I don’t have the model number, but it’s a pure modem, not a router, and it doesn’t go down. It’s only the router that needs reboot. And yes, it’s just a plug out and plug in, no actual reset.
But I can’t reboot with the App, because the app loses that function when the connection is down. Perhaps you have a recommendation on some kind of smart plug that will do an automatic reboot when the router loses connection?

We still don't know what happens or the firmware version.

- jgwdocJul 03, 2023TutorThe firmware version is simply the most recent one. I update regularly, but can’t give the exact version ‘cause I’m not home.
What happens is simple: despite no issues with the cable modem, the Nighthawk router loses connectivity and needs to be rebooted, which always fixes the issue.
“Keep Connect” is one smart plug which functions off its own local network to detect outages and reboot the router. It can also be programmed to simply reboot daily. This May be the simplest solution unless you can think of some way for me to reboot the router from a distance.- michaelkenwardJul 03, 2023Guru - Experienced User

We had one earlier today whose "latest" turned out to be three years out of date. That is why we ask for the version number.

What loses connectivity? The link to the modem? The wired Ethernet? The Wifi? All wifi?
What do the LEDs on the router look like? Are there any clues in the router's logs?
These questions may seems irrelevant to you, but this looks like your first time here. Regulars are used to these requests for details.
Accurate diagnosis depends on having as much information as possible about your network and what happens. That will waste less of your time.
