I have no Modem, but I have a WIFI. Do I need modem for my nighthawk to work?

I just bought a NETGEAR R6400 WiFi router. I do not own a modem and I want to just simply use my new WIFI. How do I do this without a modem? Or is it required to buy one.

    You don't need a modem to use the router. but if you want to get online, some type of gateway is key.
