install R7000 router w/o a smartphone
Is there a way of installing a nighthawk router without using a smart phone. Yes! I'm the last smartphone hold out:)

Glad you got it working. Please mark your thread as solved so others will know. Be sure to save off a back up configuration to file for safe keeping. Saves time if a reset is needed.

Back to square one. Do I now plug the Nighthawk R7000 into the laptop to set it up?
That's the way to do it.
The old Installation Guide is a nice potted description of how to go about things. If you have one that is. Netgear, in its wisdom has replaced it with a version that insists on using the app on a phone.
Instead, you can read the manual and the section Use a Web Browser to Access the Router.
The manual is here:
Nighthawk R7000 | AC1900 Smart WiFi Router | NETGEAR Support
Do I need to do anything to disable the old router before starting? Or will just shutting it off and plugging in the new one (R7000) be enough?
You don't need to do anything with the old router beyond unplugging it from everything, but you do need to connect and start things on the network in the right order.
Be sure to restart your network in this sequence:
- Turn off and unplug modem.
- Turn off router and computers.
- Plug in and turn on modem. Wait 2 minutes for it to connect.
- Turn on the router and wait 2 minutes for it to connect.
- Turn on computers and rest of network.
Then you can aim your browser at the R7000.
I have just noticed that nowhere do you tells us what modem/gateway sits in front of your router. That could be important, especially if it is a modem/router with lots of LAN ports on the back.

SUCCESS! It only took 1010 days, or 2 years, 9 months and 5 days, or was it 24,240 hours to get this guy working. LOL!!!!! Yes I was a young man when I bought this guy on 2019.:) But I"m from the never give up generation. Step back, yes. Give up, not a chance. I also was determined to get this sucker working before I hit that big 8 OH! 😎
I'd like to thank everyone that helped me out. I truly appreciate your time and expertise.
I did have a bit of help from my daughter who finally gave me a big 45 minutes and her time and a Smart Phone. It only took that long because I forgot that I had to use the password that came with the Nighthawk and not my password or the default admin password.
