A couple of quick options.
In Windows settings from your computer:
Settings -> Network & Internet -> Status -> Properties
Verify your network is profiled as Private
Scroll down from the Status screen and try the Network Troubleshooter.

Network is, and has always been set to private and troubleshooter can't identify the problem. Since both the router and NAS are out of warranty I don't have access to their factory support so can't get help from either of them. I really need the data stored on the NAS.

I am leaning towards it being a Windows configuration issue. Lots of events come out of Redmond every day that mess with settings.
See attached for some Network instructions to see if you can find access to your NAS.

I turn it on and verify it stays on. For home networks I have never found a circumstance where off was necessary or appropriate.
