Consider letting the AP get an ip address automatically -- and then in your main router, add the MAC address of the AP as a reserved ip address.

Thanks, both suggestions worked, for now I chose to set the AP in automatic and let the main router assign the reserved address, but ultimately I think I will go for assigning the IP manually , maybe it's cleaner to have each device set independently rather than have the main router administer everything
