Be sure to speed test with a ethernet connected PC.
Use good quality LAN cables. CAT6 is best.

How'd it turn out?

It is an odd situation. Here is a summary of what I have experiented in order of what I did.
- I connected directly to the model using a 5e cable, and was able to pull 400 MBts/sec
- Then, I connected the R8000 router and connected to one of its LAN ports. I was able to pull 400 MBts/sec.
- Then, I ran a speed tests using the Genie Web-App (192.168.1.1).was only able to pull ~200 MBts/sec.
- Then, I started WiFi and did a speed test using the Nighthawk app (iPhone). It also indicated only a ~200 MBt connection.
- Then, out of curiousity, I connected a older Nighthawk 1700 to a LAN port of the R8000, and I set the 1700 to AP mode.
- When I tested using a LAN on the 1700 with a 5e cable, I was able to get 500 Mbt/sec.
- However, when I tested using the Genie WebApp (192.168.1.1) only ~200
- Finally, when I turned on the WiFi for the 1700 and did a test with the App on my iPhone, I only got a 200 MBt connects.
What this tells me. It appears the LAN ports on the Nighthawk series are configured as passthroughs. In other words, the internal hardware/softward of the Nighthawk does do anything. That is why they are able to support such fast connections. However, as soon as the processors/software is engagued, they act as a 'throttle' on any fast connection.
In case you are wondering, I included screenshots of my settings.
