Need some troubleshooting help with r6400v2 and linux

Bought a r6400v2 yesterday and got it configured as I wanted it.  Log into my windows laptop, and speedtest is showing 100M down and 116M up 3 ft from the router.  2.4Ghz and 5Ghz both..

I run a speed test from my android phone, and I see 20M down and 25ish up on it.  Android is linux based.  It worked perfectly using the AC bands on my r6300v2 (which the 6400v2 replaced because I was getting some weird connection issues with the r6300v2).  Huh, weird.  Reboot into Linux, ubuntu 20.04.  This laptop would see 100M down and up on a different floor (when it was working) with the r6300v2... but in Ubuntu, I'm seeing 20m down and 30 up give or take.

I do a iwconfig wlo1.. and I show a bit rate of 54M.  That's 802.11G

I fire up the r6300v2 and load up dd-wrt on it, and set it up as a client of my r6400v2, and then connect to the 5Ghz off the r6300v2, and I see a bit rate of 192M.. and roughly 70 down and about that up.

What this tells me is that my linux drivers DO support 802.11N or AC.  My linux drivers support downloads of at least 116M (have seen that in the past on my old router).  The r6400v2 can handshake properly with my windows system on this same hardware.  The r6400v2 cannot handshake N or higher (seems stuck at G levels) on both my android 8 phone and my ubuntu 20.04 desktop.  My OSx seems to work perfectly (it only has a G card.. and it's faster than the linux and the android devices).  This also tells me it's only a problem on the r6400v2.. because I see over 3x the speed hooking into the r6300v2 and having it manage my connection to the net through the r6400v2.

In my dd-wrt on my r6300v2.. I'm able to set the mode to mixed mode N and AC (to exclude G, A, and B).  The r6400v2 with the latest firmware (updated before I configured anything) only has settings for up to 1300 and up to 450 (again 5ghz and 2.4ghz respectively).

Any suggestions?

  • appears to have been a channel issue.  The router was defaulting to something like channel 153 and channel 11.  I reconfigured it to channel 2 for 2.4ghz and 116(dfs) for 5ghz and now I'm seeing appropriate connection speeds.  My 5G is actually showing the 100M up and down that I pay for..

My android shows 70+ (not bad for those small mobile anenna's)

My MBP shows 75ish (the android and the mbp are still on 2.4Ghz, I see similar on my ubuntu as well on 2.4Ghz)

All of this after a reset to factory, down grade firmware (no change), reset to factory, upgrade firmware, reset to factory (again, no change), get my configs on there, and then I messed with the channels (because who doesn't do that first.. duh.. sall good, shes working right now)
