1.0.2.80 works for me in AP mode. So did 1.0.2.76. Never tried .78, and haven't tried .82 yet.
No disconnects. No WIFI drops.
I download the update and perform the update in the GUI using an Ethernet connection. I don't let the R7800 self-update.
I then hold in a paperclip in the back for 15 seconds and let the device reboot.
I set it up manually in AP mode - using a fixed IP address, not DHCP.
My other options are:
- use the WAN port for the connection to my router
- no DFS channels
- no Smart Connect
- Beamforming on
- no MU-MIMO
- no HT160
- no Media Servers

RESET
Ethernet cable from my FIBER BOX ROUTER
is plugged into the WAN (yellow) PLUG of my R7800
Computer is connected with Ethernet cable into a "SWITCH" (BLACK) plug of R7800
R7800 Assistant wizard
choose AP MODE and very simple WIFI SETTINGS
WPA2/AES SSID 2.4GHz = TESTWIFI1
& key = azertyuiopqsdfghjklmwxcvb123456
WPA2/AES SSID 5GHz =TESTWIFI2
key = azertyuiopqsdfghjklmwxcvb123456
192.168.0.200 fixed IP address IN AP MODE

The only difference for me is that when I do the firmware updates, I apply them from an Ethernet-connected PC. I then reset. I don't let the R7800 download and update itself.

Just updated it.
Works perfectly fine so far in Router mode from what I can tell.
Sure enough, some stuff is now missing, none of which I used anyway.

Thanks for taking the plunge and reporting back.
If it isn't too much trouble, if you use them, can you let us know if such features as Anywhere Access, ReadyCLOUD and ReadySHARE still work?
I've have never used Live Parental Controls, so that is non great loss. In any case Netgear and OpenDNS will part company at the end of the year. So even if a router's firmware still supports Live Parental Controls it won't work.

I apologize, I do not use any of those features. I port forward one device, use BeamForming and MU-MIMO, and have everything else cranked with QoS intentionally turned off. That's about it really.

No problem. I was just being lazy.
It is easy enough to backtrack, so I'll try to give it a go myself and report back.
I don't expect any problems, but the release notes aren't as clear as they could be. (No surprise there then.)

Looks like all is well with ReadyCLOUD, ReadySHARE and Anywhere Access.
I can even get into the router's GUI with a browser on a mobile device on wifi.
I'm still trying to work out what they mean by "remote GUI access".
