NETGEAR R8000 AC3200 Nighthawk X6 Random restart and drop all connections
Hi, I have an issue with my NETGEAR R8000 AC3200 Nighthawk X6 router. I was working fine with default firmware V1.0.3.4_1.1.2. Couple of months ago I installed the latest firmware V1.0.4.88_10.1....
- Nov 11, 2024None of your solutions didn't work. I upgraded to
Firmware Version 1.0.5.88 and it becomes worse.
It looks like the issue is Netgear firmware. It fills up the memory and use all CPU cause to restart the router in heavy load. It started to over heat.
So I decided to flash the router with the Freshtomato open source firmware and everything is working smoothly. Now I can get over 800Mbps internet speed. I downloaded lot of small and big files for hours and that old issue never raised.
So I can confirm it is a Netgear firmware issues. If anyone has the same issue no point of posting here. Just flash your router with Freshtomato https://freshtomato.org/
Thank you.

What is the Mfr and model# of the Internet Service Providers modem/ONT the NG router is connected too?
Be sure your using a good quality LAN cable between the modem and router. CAT6 is recommended.
Try disabling the following and see:
Armor, IPv6, Guest Network, Smart Parental Controls or Circle, Traffic Meter.
Has a power off for 1 minute then back ON with the ISP modem and router and satellite(s) been performed since last update?
Be sure to restart your network in this sequence:
Turn off and unplug modem.
Turn off router and computers.
Plug in and turn on modem. Wait 2 minutes for it to connect.
Turn on the router and wait 2 minutes for it to connect.
Turn on computers and rest of network.
Has a factory reset and setup from scratch been performed since last FW update.

Thank you for your reply. I can't see any model number in ONT. Anyway it should be re-branded model of Nokia-ONT G-010G-Q. Here is the photo of it.
ONT and router is connected with the original Cat6 cable which provided by BT Openreach.
It is still working without any issues with original BT router.
I don't use Armor, IPv6, Guest Network, Smart Parental Controls or Circle, Traffic Meter.
One thing I notice is once I upgraded to latest firmware Internet speed has dropped dramatically by 150Mbps to 200Mbps. Now I'm getting around 500Mbps to 600Mpbs on 900Mbps full fiber BT broadband connection.
I already tried everything you explained except factory rest.
Router isn't restarting when I don't use it for download large files. Router isn't over heated or anything when it restarts.
Do you think router NVRAM is full?
Thank you.

Looks like a standard optical network termination (ONT). No router involved. (BT probably gave you one of its "Hubs".)

You should try that, especially if you have been using this router on an older Internet service. You need to get it to forget any settings acquired from that connection.
If you don't want to go the whole hog with the reset, start by taking the R8000 through its Internet setup wizard.

Yes it doesn't have any router. BT has provided router which is plunged to ONT with a RJ45 cable. I just removed the BT router and plugged it directly to Netgear R8000 Internet port. Anyway it works fine without any issues with original firmware.
I already factory rest the router before set it up with new fiber connection.
I have found Parental control (Circle) was enable. I disable it. Now it is bit stable for some time. But suddenly loosing all wired and wireless connections. It doesn't work until restart the router.

Try a factory reset and setup from scratch and see if the issue continues.

Can you please recommend any stable firmware? I have seen many people report the same issue everywhere with this R8000-V1.0.4.88_10.1.88_hotfix firware and others too. I can't chose which is the most stable.
Thank you.
