Netgear R8300 Resetting to Factory Defaults

I have a Netgear Nighthawk R8300.  It worked well for a while then started to lock up, and would reset to factory defaults upon power cycling.  I've reinstalled the firmware to the latest version V1.0.2.136  (manually using a ethernet cable connection from host computer).  No improvement.  Spent 75 minutes with tech support and still no improvement.  Anyone know how to fix this?

    The latest isn't always the greatest when it comes to firmware. 

    I'd try actually downgrading to version 1.0.2.130 over a hardwired connection. Then factory reset it and do a clean install (not from backup)
