I'm trying to register my Netgear Nighthaw WiFi router so that I can manage and ensure connections are secure and I'm getting a message that indicates the serial number is registered to someone else....

Register for what?
Very few functions require "registration", which is essentially for support and warranty purposes. Neither of these apply to a six-year old device.
What are you trying to achieve. "manage and ensure connections are secure" could mean various things.
