Does this also happen in different browsers, Try MS Edge, FireFox or Opera?

Yes this fails on any browser, chrome, MS Edge, and Firefox, and Safari (Mac). The fact it fails using command line curl is telling.

  Considering that Access Mode breaks the web interface is a major bug. I hope that NetGear will at least release a patch for this because it kinda bricks the router in access point mode.
  
  The R7900P is using a Broadcom BCM4906 chipset and not Atheros. So the support on 3rd party FW such as OpenWRT or DD-WRT is limited due to Broadcom lack of open source licensing if I recall.
