Nighthawk CAX80 Ethernet WAN
So this $400+ modem/router that I've bought does not have an Ethernet WAN/Internet port? Am I correct?

Yup. It's the norm for Netgear cable-TV modem+router models. (And,
I thought, others.)
I know nothing, but I suspect that it's related to the requirement
for DOCSIS modem firmware to be controlled by the ISP, not by the user.
Using a device so restricted without connection to a cable-TV ISP would
present many firmware-related problems.
Conceivably, separating the modem firmware from the router firmware
might alleviate any such problems, and the CAX80 does seem to have such
a separation, so my speculation might be faulty. But what do I know?
