Version V1.3.3.148 extracts just fine here.
It is just three days old – it replaces R7000P-V1.3.3.142, which has gone – so you may want to see if it causes any problems before diving in.
The automated updates can take a few days to arrive after they hit the support pages.

Hi Guru.
So I should wait a few days and then try the Netgear genie to update the firmware or reload the file to my pc ? Just wondering. I would think Netgear could make updates a little easier like other software updates from other companies. Doesn't make sense to me to have to use a zip file for an update. Thanks for the info.

It does. But some people are impatient. So firmware goes up on the support pages for each device usually before the robots kick in.
I'd be surprised if others don't do the same thing. (Microsoft certainly does.) They all have to accommodate users with different levels of technical expertise.
These things eventually go out over an automated service. That upsets some people, who turn if off. So Netgear uses several channels.
There are times when someone has firmware so old that the automated process can't handle the giant leap for mankind. You are five or six versions, and three years, behind the pack.

What you do it up to you. I'm just explaining the process.
The .chk things is wrong. If you want a manual update, read the instructions in the release notes.

Dear Michael,
Just letting you know thanks for the information you provided. At least you explained to me how Netgear handles updates. I would prefer that Netgear would send me an email when a firmware update is available or do automatic updates without the hassle of going through a zip file. I have never received any emails from Netgear since I purchased my router three years ago. Doesn't appear to me Netgear is too concerned about letting their customers know when they have updates available for their products because I haven't had this issue before with other companies. The only way I knew about this latest update was by accident going to their website checking on something else. In my opinion they could at least send an email once in awhile and make their updates more user friendly but I guess since my support expired two years ago I guess I got shoved into the "unpaid support" category. We all can't be techies. We want user friendly products and updates that don't make it a hassle and having to go to a third party source to unzip a file. I guess I am so far behind on their firmware updates it probably doesn't matter at this point since I would probably have to go through several outdated updates just to get current. Thanks for your time and advice.

In theory Netgear does send out email alerts. You just have to sign up for them. But Netgear keeps changing the system, so heaven only knows how it works now.
In any case, previous email alerts caused problems when people turned up here asking if they were genuine. The alerts also seemed to be more to do with marketing than new firmware.
The challenge for Netgear, and other companies, is to find the right balance between "techies" who want absolute control over their systems and people who just don;t want to be bothered. Netgear caters for the second category with its automated update process. Techies hate that, and shout at Netgear and insist that they want to disable that feature.
What we need is something in between. In my case, I find that the desktop genie for Windows is a way of getting update alerts than I can then implement as I see fit.
These days there are enough software tools out there to let us monitor the support pages for devices and get alerts when they change.
I don't get this bit.

What third party site do you have in mind? The firmware is on Netgear's own site. Unzipping is built into how your PC works.
