What do you want the R9000 to do?
If it is just wifi, and/or USB ReadySHARE, you can put the R9000 into Wireless Access Point mode.
How do I change my NETGEAR router to AP mode? | Answer | NETGEAR Support
but then you hit this:
Disabled Features on the Router when set to AP Mode | Answer | NETGEAR Support
What is that SKY router? They have supplied quite a few variations over the years.
What sort of Internet do you have?
What do you intend to use to connect you to the Internet? The R9000 won't do it on its own. It has no modem function.

michaelkenward I want my router simply for wifi and fixed ethernet connectivity - no file sharing.
I current have 150mbs fibre (FTTP) and when i had BT it was a simple connection from the R9000 to the optical unit in the room via an RJ45 ethernet connection - no problems!
I want to completely bypass the sky router and just use the R9000 as I did when using BT fibre service
Thanks

OK. Fibre and an ONT.
So you should be able to ditch the SKY box, unlike DSL, which needs a modem.

AP mode can't do that.
