FYI to all:
I called Netgear support to tell them flashing the firmward didn't work, so they are going to replace the unit. I exeplained to the representative that there were mutliple users complaining of the same issue on the community site, and he told me that the team that handles the advanced issues (tiger team, he called it) told him to replace the unit. There wasn't anything else he could do.
Maybe if the next unit has the same problem they will finally engage engineering, as no one seems to be watching this community site.

I think everyone having WiFi issues should look at this:

I don't have any Google Home or Google hardware products on my network, but I do have two Amazon Echos and a couple of TPL smart televisions that accept Chromecast. I wonder if that would be it. Strangely, though, they don't effect my R8000.

It has to be related to the Chromecast feature. There are way too many users experiencing WiFi issues with some Netgear routers. Apparently, not all routers are affected.

I don't have any google or any other smart speaker products. I have 2x Apple TV's, a MacBook Pro, iPhone and iPad connected and they all experience regular wifi drops - mainly on the 2.4GHz spectrum.
But what is interesting, if you get the stats on the WiFi, the 2.4GHz Uptime is always within seconds of when the devices disconnected - for example, the router has been up 4 days, if you look at the screenshot below, you can see that the 2.4GHz has been up for 1hr 22minues - this was the last time I was disconnected - so it's definately a router issue with the WiFi crashing.
