So my AV's have been bugging me to update my Router FW.

Win11,

HW Version R7900, updated to

FW Version V1.0.4.46_10.0.53

GUI Language Version V1.0.4.42_2.1.44.1

So I decided, heck maybe a year later after experiencing apparent blocking and lots of latency to the internet there was a new FW that did not cause latency in my R7900 early version.

I downloaded R7900-V1.0.4.46_10.0.53, the latest available for my model and version. but still appears to be the same FW as I used last year, and after REBOOTING with the latest FW, the same old latency returned, and my Outlook would no longer send/receive emails.

So I flashed back to the previous FW version

Firmware Version V1.0.4.38_10.0.50
GUI Language Version V1.0.4.38_2.1.44.1

for my router an voila, instant emails and no delay in any internet. I'm thankful that at least Netgear gives the ability to downgrade.

I paid a good price for this router and it has run reliably for many power on years- maybe 6 or so, but I have had two DDoS attacks in the past 6 months, my ISP Xfinity does not have any idea what DDoS is or how to detect and block them before the gateway because there is no technically competent staff running detection software or understands Indicators of Compromise, I cannot upgrade to the latest router FW because it basically kills my email access, so it is time for a new unit that will allow firewall rules and ease of configuration.

Progress of needing to update technology, but why, when this router supports IPV6 should it not have the capability to do much more and receive more FW updates that are not 2-3 years old? Retorical question - don't bother with an answer, just venting.

It is very curious, no routing restrictions are placed with the latest FW, no port blocks, no restriction on sites, no blocked sites, just FW update with everything wide open. If I had any decent detection software to report the DDoS, maybe I could start blocking it, if more detail to specifically allow traffic to and from my email service (yeah, tried those rulesets too)

Fortunately my AV's and PC setings have been able to keep Malware from wiping my files and stopping the attacks on my pc, for now.

Time to check out the competition or at least secure new products if I am going to again shell out +$250 for a secure and reliable gig speed multiband router that also has user configurable, allows easily settable rulesets, provides some edge firewall capability like running Snort, plus AntiVirus - interoperability capabilities.

Don't know if anyone makes such a consumer grade device.
