we have not tried a factory reset yet as i was going to just try the firmware first before having to reset everything. Any help is greatly appreciated!
Always the first thing to try.
This is a nuisance because you then have to reconfigure the device all over again.
You can backup your settings before you reset and restore them later. But that may just bring back the fault. Then again, at least you will know if the reset fixed the problem.

My Nighthawk X6 R8000 router has had a Firmware Update notification for months now that I've been avoiding because Netgear is only interested in selling the high end routers - not supporting them. I know it's ridiculous and completely greedy of us to want our expensive routers to run stable firmware AND get the latest security fixes, but alas, a girl can dream...
I'm running V1.0.4.28_10.1.54 (http://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/R8000/R8000-V1.0.4.28_10.1.54.zip) which is a year old at this point, but it's mostly stable, at least for me. With Netgear, what works for one doesn't work for all, so I always suggest making a backup of your "working" configuration before doing any firmware updates. This way, if the update sucks you can roll back w/o wasting a day on reconfiguring everything.

Wide reports of speeds dropping 50% or more over previous firmware versions, as well as the removal of many popular features like DLNA, etc.
If you have issues after an update, search the forum for your router model & firmware version and read through everyone's complaints. Often there is a "fix" someone has randomly discovered that involves enabling/disabling a seemingly unrelated feature and ta-da! the bug disappears and the router works (somewhat) normally.
