Nighthawk X6 R8000 GB Speed issues
I have the latest Firmware. I have 1 GB internet at my ISP Modem-- tested at the modem. As soon as it goes through the router it drops to 220-250 MB download. Why is the Nighthawk reducing the sp...

Hi All,
I purchased a Nighthawk AXE7800 RAXE300 and transferred the configuration and bingo! 1GB download speed that I pay for, no problem. It was a great pick. Happy to share that. It also allows me to go up to 2.5 GB incoming download speed in the future.
So it confirmed that my R8000 had either firmware problems or hardware problems and was end of life.

What is the model number of the Shaw modem?
Are you using the Ookla stand alone measurement tool?
Are you testing on a Windows device or what?

What is the model number of the Shaw modem?
Does not matter, and I would have to get that and I am not climbing up into my wiring closet to get that at this time. ISP tested with their direct meters on the Coax, on the Modem and on the router. The Coax and modem tests were exactly the same and then dropped on the router. Consist with the tests I ran on my laptop on multiple speed test.
Are you using the Ookla stand alone measurement tool?
No through the website, and we used 2 or 3 different speed test sites and compared to his direct monitoring tool. The only speed tests that were below the others was on the router.
Are you testing on a Windows device or what -- monitoring tool and then on windows laptop. Our testing matched on the direct connect and modem. Routers speed degradation was consistent with my laptop and their monitoring tools.

It does matter if you want informed answers. Otherwise all is guesswork.
If you can access its interface, maybe that will give you some clues.

Hello,
The picture of the modem label is attached.
I have the option with this modem to throttle up to 2 GB. It currently tests with my laptop and the Shaw ISP Tech meter device at over 1 GB
Then the router test drops it to about 250 MB (testing with my laptop and the Shaw Tech meter.
All are wired
I think the router is just too old and I need to look to upgrade it for the faster throughput for my server, office, stream for video conferences and teaching etc.

"Throttle up to" is an odd way to put it. That term is usually there to describe reducing the output.
If the modem can deliver 2 GB then your router cannot handle that.
But can you get that into the modem? What does the cable service promise to deliver?
According to the specs for your "modem" it is actually a modem/router. The label you posted even says that it has a "default wifi network".
That is why we ask what may seem like you to be a pointless question. Far from it.
So what is the R8000 in there for?
You said earlier that your Internet service is at 1000 Mbps. That will push the R8000 to its limits. But I would expect the router to deliver >900 Mbps.
Perhaps this is down to the R8000 getting in the way. You seem to have two routers in a line. That is a recipe for problems.

Hi there,
I am paying for 1 GB service and the modem is set there, and the modem tested at that level both on their meter and my laptop. If I wanted it could be increased up to 2 GB but that would be beyond the router. The router however does not deliver 1 GB that is being paid for, it delivers between 220 and 250 MB when direct tested with the same devices used to test the modem.
The router is disabled on the modem (and has always been disabled) because I have my own router to manage the network.
The modem does not deliver WIFI, nor does the router. I have WIFI AP on the network running from the GB Switches. I am not worried about the WIFI speed it is acceptable. We are concerned about the wired speed not being what it we pay for and expect.
thoughts? I am thinking I need a new one -- but I was hoping to hear some successes with some models here.

Last time I had my R8000 online I was able to get around 900Mpbs over the wire. Something to take note of as I saw with mine, Circle/SPC, Access Controls and Traffic Meter features seem to impact performances on this model router. So I was sure I didn't enable them after doing a factory reset and setup from scratch.

Wireless speed on this model router should only see about 300-500Mpbs on 5Ghz AC and is typical max speed for 2x2 MIMO devices. - michaelkenwardFeb 20, 2025Guru - Experienced User

Disabled how? The wifi is turned off or the modem/router is in "bridge mode".
Looking at the specifications for the modem/router, it seems to be newer and more capable than the R8000.

Hi FURRYe38
Thanks for the reply,
that would be acceptable speeds. And we were getting more than what we are now. That is why it seems like a firmware along the way has caused a problem. I have reset the router a couple of times and before doing anything it still isn't there but hovers at 220-250 MB not close to what we pay for.
Access Control is and has always been disabled.
Traffic meter is and has always been disabled.
Not sure where to find the Circle/SPC -- can you elaborate where that is.
Your link said you went back to a older firmware, where do I find that version to try -- I looked on the website and did not find the older firmware.
I'd like to try that. Thanks for your help.

If your ISP router is a gateway, This would be a double NAT (two router) condition which isn't recommended. This would be a double NAT condition which isn't recommended. https://kb.netgear.com/30186/What-is-Double-NAT
https://kb.netgear.com/30187/How-to-fix-issues-with-Double-NAT
Couple of options,
1. Configure the modem for transparent bridge or modem only mode. Then use the NG router in router mode. You'll need to contact the ISP for help and information in regards to the modem being bridged correctly.
2. If you can't bridge the modem, disable ALL wifi radios on the modem, configure the modems DMZ/ExposedHost or IP Pass-Through for the IP address the NG router gets from the modem. https://kb.netgear.com/25891/DMZ-on-NETGEAR-routers

3. Or disable all wifi radios on the modem and connect the NG router to the modem, LAN to LAN configure AP mode on the NG router.

Try option #2 first...This applies to any FW version on the R8000.Access Control is and has always been disabled.
Traffic meter is and has always been disabled.
Not sure where to find the Circle/SPC -- can you elaborate where that is.
Circle maybe seen on older FW on the routers web page, however seen in the Nighthawk app on newer versions of FW as Circle was moved to Smart Parental Controls.
Your link said you went back to a older firmware, where do I find that version to try -- I looked on the website and did not find the older firmware.

Look at the previous FW version section.
I'd like to try that. Thanks for your help.

Yes the modem is newer, Shaw updated them all a while ago. I don't remember when the router started acting up in correlation to that upgrade.
The router on the modem is bridged to allow our router to control the network.
We don't use the WIFI on the modem or router. We have WIFI AP around the building run off the GB network switches (and this is not our issue or focus)
I am beginning to think we need to change out the router......
Any recommendations?
- CherylD2025Feb 20, 2025Aspirant
1. Router on the modem is disabled or bridged so the modem is only operating in Modem mode. They know we have our own router. And that has been working fine.
I just had them here to reconfirm the configuration and run the tests with me.
2. does not apply (see 1 above)
3. We have it setup properly. Thanks for confirming.
the Circle option I believe is off as we have the parental controls off, and don't see anywhere to set it.
I am going to change the Firmware back to the one in your post -- and see if that helps -- 1.0.4.62
I will report back.

What is the router there for?
With no need for wifi, and various switches, how about using the modem/'router to feed the switches and wifi sources?
Simple is always best. Remove any unnecessary devices. They will only slow things down. Especially when they are getting long on the tooth.

thanks michaelkenward for your suggestion, However we prefer to manage routing on our own routers rather than the ISP's modem/router. We then have full control of the router capabilities.
I appreciate and agree with you on simpler is always better.
Thanks for your suggestion.

Backed off the to .62 -- the speed went up to 450MB which is better but still not where I would like to see it. Maybe this old "girl" Just can't keep up with the modem (newer tech)
- FURRYe38Feb 20, 2025Guru - Experienced User
Only other way to check that would be to put the ISP modem back to router mode, then configure AP mode on the R8000.
Maybe due to retirement. 😉

Makes sense. In which case, a new router might give you even more control. But as you aren't looking for a wifi source you can eliminate routers that come with all manner of bells and whistles. Flashy wifi capability and control is the last thing you need.
