Nighthawk X6 R8000 router responds to Port 68 Internet probes

I have seen this issue posted here from 2016. This issue has not been resolved by NETGEAR.

My router has the lastest firmware as of this post's date (Sept 26, 2021): V1.0.4.76_10.1.82.

Using GRC's ShieldsUp port scanning free service to probe port 68 (https://www.grc.com/port_68.htm), the router does reply to the scan on this port. Basically instead of not providing a reply at all which is what we want (i.e. remaining stealth) it replies as CLOSED.

The fix is to disable the DHCP server on the router, apply the change, then re-enable it and apply the change.

I'm not sure what event triggers the router to go into this state. I'll have to pay more attention and probe the port before and after I do a change to the router settings. Things that I normaly do in the router is enable/disable guest networks, updating firmware, enabling/disabling QoS, defining the Internet bandwidth, defining static IP addresses...

In summary, to NETGEAR engineers, you do have an issue here, quite old as seeing on similar posts from 5 years ago.

Peace.

Something to contact NG support about as engineers don't frequent these forums.

Or try using some 3rd party FW instead of Stock FW.

    Good Luck.
