Nighthawk X8 AC5300 Model R8500 cutting wired and wirless speeds in half

Hello all,

I'm having a similar problem that many seem to have, though I can't find a solution that matches my specs/issues. I'm using a R8500 Nighthawk X8 Tri-Band AC5300 WiFi Router. I started getting very slow speeds on both wired and wireless connections.

I called Spectrum/Charter and the informed me that I had been upgraded in speed for the same price I'm paying (Yay!) and when I plug my wired Win10 desktop direclty into the modem, I'm getting 400+mbs download speeds, but when I go through my router I'm averaging 200-210mbs, and never more than that. I tested wireless connections (5ghz) on a PC laptop, Mac laptop, and an iPad and they all average just under 200mbs.

I've updated the firmware and it's running V1.0.2.130

I'm not super saavy when it comes to network settings, so I'm looking for help.

Thank you!

  • Many times old settings can cause issues when internet speeds are upgraded.

Usually an easy fix is to factory reset it and reinstall it. push and hold reset while its powered up for 7-10 seconds or  until the lights change.

Then re-install it. Many times this fixes issues when ISP's upgrade speeds.

Avoid turning on qos, parental controls, traffic monitoring, armor, disney circle when you do the setup.
