Hi guys I have just purchased the night hawk x8. A.c. 5300.
I asked the store for a good gaming modem/router and they sold me this. When I open it up it mentions that i need a modem aswell as this unit is this correct- previously i have had a modem/router all in 1? Please help- im at wits end.

None of that is an actual model number. "AC5300" is a speed, not a
model number. Ever helpful, Netgear product packaging emphasizes speeds
like "ACxxxx", but that's not the model identifier. Look at the product
label. I'll assume "R8500".

Probably. Normally, a Netgear "R<anything>" is a router without a
modem, a "D<anything>" is/includes a DSL modem, and a "C<anything>"
is/includes a cable-TV modem.

Apparently, you bought a router (only). What kind of modem?
