What is that ONT box? Is this router the R7000 or something else on your network.
When you changed the network did you reset the R7000 and set it up for the new network?
Our old router we had connected to the Nighthawk and used the nighthawk for wifi and the old verizon router for basically our Cable TV because it had the coax connection.
I'm confused. What is the Nighthawk there? It is a brand not a model. Again, is it the R7000 or another router?
With the new internet setup we have Coax, but also have ethernet and the technician told me that he set the ONT box to ethernet setting and once we are ready to drop cable, we can just connect the nighthawk for our internet and return the verizon router.
What does that lot mean? coax and ethernet?
We need to know what all the devices are on your network.
What is this Verizon router? Are you using it with the R7000?
Two routers on your network can cause headaches. For example, you can end up with local problems with address on your network. Among other things, the other router can misdirect traffic to addresses that the Netgear router usually handles, such as routerlogin.net or the usual default IP address for a router, 192.168.1.1.
This explains some of the other drawbacks.

The ONT box is the ISP panel in our garage. The R7000 is our Netgear router that we have.

No, I did not setup a new network. Should I? We already had an established Wifi network on the netgear.

The Nighthawk is the Netgear Nighthawk R7000 wifi router that we have.

We have Coax running for our cable service; provides channel guide and on demand for FIOS service.
We need to know what all the devices are on your network.
What is this Verizon router? Are you using it with the R7000?
We have the router that Verizon provides, but it has terrible performance, so we want to just use our netgear router for our internet service.

Did you ask them if the verizon router could be removed and the Nighthawk router be put in it's place and if there is any special configurations like PPPoE or WAN ID or VLAN ID configurations needed?
If not, then, Couple of options,
1. Configure the modem for transparent bridge or modem only mode. Then use the NG router in router mode. You'll need to contact the ISP for help and information in regards to the modem being bridged correctly.
2. If you can't bridge the modem, disable ALL wifi radios on the modem, configure the modems DMZ/ExposedHost or IP Pass-Through for the IP address the NG router gets from the modem. https://kb.netgear.com/25891/DMZ-on-NETGEAR-routers

3. Or disable all wifi radios on the modem and connect the NG router to the modem, LAN to LAN configure AP mode on the NG router.

So it is a connection to the fibre network with an Ethernet socket that you can connect from the ONT box to the WAN port on the R7000?

The R7000 probably has settings that worked for the old Internet service. The new service probably has different settings.
You can either reset the R7000 and set it up from scratch, or you can use a web browser to connect to the R7000's graphical user interface (GUI) and run the Internet setup wizard it detects the new service.
Also, as microchip8 suggests, talk to the ISP about the settings that you should use.
