R6220 Internet slow, says firmware out of date, directs to routerlogin.net, which says it cant updat
I tried to be pretty thorough in the subject line.
Basically, I've been having internet speed issues. I'm supposed to be getting 400 mbps and I'm getting 30-40 at best. I just bought a new modem after being told that something I got in 2018 was "end of life" category, and would soon stop working altogether. I haven't replaced this router yet, and when I called customer service today, for 30 mins, they said it would be good for 10 years, and they could fix it, but i needed to pay $50 for a 3-month warranty extension.
Before giving into that, I told him to send the troubleshooting steps, which never seem to work, and again my app behaves strangely. It opens up, I put in my username and password, I see my dashboard, but it immediately jumps to a screen that says "Firmware Out of Date" It has a picture of the router, and it says "R6220 Visit routerlogin.net to update your router's firmware."
After figuring out that I needed to type in "admin" and "password" to open up that page, I found the internet tab, and I found the update firmware link, and it attempted to update it, and said that no updates were available It says I have firmware V1.1.0.50_1.0.1
Can anyone help??? Today has been an endless struggle lol
The SB6190 is much better than the SB6141.
It should be able to hit full speeds but you're not going to hit them over wireless. Thats why we have people test wired.
maybe you can borrow a laptop/pc or buy a usb--ethernet converter. That'd tell you the speed you're actually getting at the modem and the router.
The R6220 is a base model AC device with only a 2x2 antenna setup. its not going to set any speed records and I highly doubt you'll hit 400mbps over 5ghz on it. Maybe closer to the 200mbps that you're close to hitting.
Not giving it any grief as most devices don't need faster speeds than 200mbps. for example, streaming 4k video only needs 20-40mbps.
so if your phone/tablet/streamer is hitting those speeds, its not going to be the bottleneck.

So a few questions.
1. What modem/gateway do you have?
2. what speeds do you get directly connected to the modem?
3. What speeds do you get hardwired into the router?
4. Are you speedtesting over 2.4ghz or 5ghz? 2.4ghz is much much slower than 5ghz and more sensitive to interference.
5. Who's giving you this info? a modem from 2 years ago isn't necessarily end of life. My cm1000 is more than 2 years old and isn't anywhere close to end of life.
6. the R6220 isn't a high end device. But over 5ghz should give you faster speeds. But its also dependant on what you're testing on. what device are you speedtesting with? And how are you testing speeds?

First thank yaou, I realized I was not testing on the 5G connection. I checked that connection and I re-tested and I got it all the way up to 136 mbps
(1) New gateway/modem I got yesterday was Arris Surfboard SB6190 DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem
Previously I had been using Arris Surfboard SB6141. The old one said speeds up to 343 mbps, the new one says up to 1.4 gbps
I guess now my question is, should I go back to the old modem? Comcast activated service on my new modem yesterday and I really don't want to call them back again. 136 mbps is not 400 but its better than 50. still not close to 343!
(2) can't connect directly (no device with ethernet port)
(3) see above.
(4) now over 5 ghz
(5) info came from agent on comcast tech support.
(6) been testing on my chromebook and my phone.
just tested again on chromebook and got all the way up to 160 mbps. It was 55 mbps over the phone.
do you think I do actually need to use this new modem?
