It might help if you told people what the modem is in front of this router, if there is one. The model number could be useful. Is it, by any chance, also a router, with a set of LAN ports on the back

The Nighthawk refused to connect to the PI3.
It helps to troubleshoot if I think of it the other way round. The only thing the router connects to is the Internet. Then things, like the Pi, connect to the router.
