R7000 dropping 5Ghz randomly
I was transitioned to work from home so I was able to finally notice this, but my 5Ghz connection on my router occasionally drops. During the course of my 9-10 hour shift, the connection drops around...

the general agreed upon decent firmware for the R7000 is 1.0.9.42.
the recently released version is still waiting feedback but the initial results aren't any better from what I've seen.
What modem is it from xfinity?
Try installing that firmware, factory reset again, and make sure to manually install.

It is surprising that when you go to any big box store in my area, you usually see this model being sold as new. It sucks that you only get 90 days of technical support and then after that, you’re on your own with troubleshooting, aside from the 1 year warranty.
Just for the sake of testing it, I updated my firmware again and the issue definitely is still there. 5Ghz keep dropping almost every 10-15 minutes. But when rolled back to the old good version (x.42), works like a charm.

I'd be interested to know just how many devices you are operating on 5ghz band? I have a maximum of 9 devices using 5ghz WiFi at any time split between standard 5ghz and Guest. I'm just not getting any drops at all and this is what I don't get, why are you and others getting constant WiFi drops on 5ghz WiFi and I'm not? What's different about your set up to mine? Why does v.42 firmware seem to work for you and yet the latest firmware doesn't, and yet v.100 works absolutely without fault for me. It's weird isn't it.
- rpzky8Jun 08, 2020GuideI have my desktop, a work iMac and a Peloton connected to my 5Ghz all the time. All others are in 2.4Ghz, which is a lot of devices (around 12).

rpzky8In total, I have 15 devices connected via WiFi, 5 permanently connected to 5ghz, 4 others on 5ghz that only connect when in range, i.e. cell phones/ipad etc and the remainder are on 2.4ghz. I then have 4 devices hardwired via a Netgear GS105 switch leaving three spare ports on the back of my R7000. I think the maximum number of devices I've had attached at any one time, has been 21, so 17 on WiFi and 4 hardwired. All this on the latest firmware with no drop outs.
My router isn't hidden away in a cupboard anywhere, it's sat on a table in our TV room beaming WiFi all over the house and it reaches out into my garden on 2.4ghz. I'm on a standard fibre broadband with a maximum speed of just 37mbps download and 9mbps upload.

After about 1 year of using my R7000P Nighthawk with no issues, all of a sudden 5Ghz decides to drop out 5-7 times a day. The logs show nothing of interest, just the usual DHCP IP calls and admin logins (me).
When the 5Ghz band drops out, both wired and the 2.4Ghz band remain fine and those devices stay connected to the internet (NBN).
I have tried power cycling and factory resets, but the problem continues.
I was running firmware 1.3.1.64_10.1.36 and the admin console was telling me that it was the latest version. However, when I checked the netgear site, it appears that there is a later firmware 1.3.2.124_10.1.64 which I have just upgraded to. I'm currently waiting to see if this fixes it or not.
HOWEVER I HAVE NO FAITH IN NETGEAR....so I'm also doing some research in case it (most likely) doesn't work.
I've seen many posts here instructing people with similar issues to me, to update/change their firmware to "the .42" - I tried to find this here, but was unable to:
https://www.netgear.com/support/product/R7000P.aspx#download
What is the equivalent of "the .42" for the R7000P, and where do I find it?
Oh, and next time I'm in the market for a router or modem, I'm never going near NetGear again!

Hello,
I purchased an ASUS RT-AC68U to replace the R7000 because of the latest security concern. This is a brand often recommended in these forums. However, in the same location with the same settings and devices, the ASUS was slightly slower and had much less range. With the release of the .106 firmware, the R7000 has been stable and I returned the ASUS to the retailer. In my case, I reset the router to default and used a wired connection to flash the firmware.
I've owned an R7000 for approximately 5 years and in general, I've never experienced any concerns with the router. I had one troublesome issue that was actually caused by a wired Onkyo audio receiver and not the router.
If anyone in the community would recommend a router with the same or better range than the R7000 or R7800, I will consider replacing the R7000. It won't last forever and I do not need to stay with NetGear as a brand but the R7000 has given many good years of service.
There are some discussions regarding the latest firmware in this Netgear forum.
Note that my router uses mostly default settings and I do not use "Smart Connect".
