R7000 firmware won’t update

I’m trying to provide parental controls for my kids’ devices, I really just want to be able to turn off their internet during certain times. I downloaded the Nighthawk app and tried to set my router up in it. It won’t advance past needing a firmware update. I tried updating the firmware using the link and it gets stuck trying to connect to Netgear server. I reset the router to factory as I read that can be a problem with firmware updates. When I go to router settings page the firmware needs update button has disappeared. But when I go to the app at still says firmware is out of date and the page it sends me to will not open. I deleted and started over again with the app. I don’t know what else to do.
