r7000 ports blocking external hard drive
My Goflex Home external hard drive has dropped off my home network. I do not know why that happened, but for whatever reason, the problem is that the ports it uses to connect to the network, 80 and 4...

OK, I figured it out. The ethernet cable going to the router was broken.New ethernet cable, hard drive back online. It was helpful to realize that the hard drive absolutely had to be listed in the "attached devices" page, as you noted, since that prompted me to look again at the physical setup.
Thanks for your help.

You need to get your GoFlex back onto your home network first. Otherwise, the port forwarding test will probably always fail.
Try following the step by step instructions provided by Seagate for opening the ports (link). The instructions are for a different router model but you should get the general idea. Note, it suggests that you can use UPnP instead of port forwarding.

Thanks very much for the link, which provides step-by step instructions from Seagate. UPnP is already enabled on my router. The next step is to enable "http" in port forwarding, which is port 80. Sounds good. But I have to enter the IP address of my GoFlex hard drive, and I don't know how to find that, since it's not showing up on my list of devices. Any thoughts on how to identify the ip address of my elusive GoFlex? BTW, I tried "ping go_flex" from the console of a windows pc, and it did not find the GoFlex.

You should not need to enable port forwarding unless UPnP doesn't work. The Seagate instructions walk you through testing it first with UPnP, then resort to using port forwarding only if necessary.
You can find the IP address of your GoFlex by logging onto your R7000 and clicking on Attached Devices.
If "ping go_flex" doesn't work, try "ping go_flex.local".
