Many thanks for the quick response.
Yes, I did perform a power cycle after the last firmware update which was a while ago now (more than a year?).
ISP modem: Comtrend VR3030
Anyway, I had to dig out my old laptop with an ethernet port in order to perform the factory reset you suggested, that's why it took me a few days to actually do it..
So far so good.

Good to hear.
Model of the ISP modem suggests a router at the modem. This would be a double NAT (two router) condition which isn't recommended. This would be a double NAT condition which isn't recommended. https://kb.netgear.com/30186/What-is-Double-NAT

Couple of options,
1. Configure the modem for transparent bridge or modem only mode. Then use the NG router in router mode. You'll need to contact the ISP for help and information in regards to the modem being bridged correctly.
2. If you can't bridge the modem, disable ALL wifi radios on the modem, configure the modems DMZ/ExposedHost or IP Pass-Through for the IP address the NG router gets from the modem. https://kb.netgear.com/25891/DMZ-on-NETGEAR-routers

3. Or disable all wifi radios on the modem and connect the NG router to the modem, LAN to LAN configure AP mode on the NG router.

Glad you got it working. Be sure to save off a back up configuration to file for safe keeping. Saves time if a reset is needed.

The ISP modem is in fact in bridge mode. I double checked.
It is the router that initiates the disconnect. It is not clear why.
Is there any way to log the router's actions in more detail in order to troubleshoot what is going on?

How?
I ask because different devices have different ways of getting into those settings and there have been times when people assume that they are in bridge mode simply because they turned off the wifi from a modem/router.
In this case, that modem looks much like Netgear's DM200, with only basic router function and no wifi, so we can rule that one out.
