Using Wifi Explorer on the Mac I can see that my Netgear R7500 is using network Mode b/g on the 2.4Ghz band and is thus limited to a Max rate of 54Mbps - even though the Mode setting in the router co...

Should have said, it's using WPA2

      you might enable them seeing how it's part of the WIFI 802.11n standard

    And voila - after enabling WMM I now see Mode a/c available and speed back up to 289 Mbps max Rate. Thanks - would never have thought of looking there !
