Thanks all. I found a different solution not too long after posting this. It isn't ideal, but it does work. I'm sharing the HGST HDD via my Windows machine and had to do some gymnastics with Time Machine to make the Mac be able to use it as a backup. I want both of my machines backing up to this HDD, so that's why I originally wanted it connected to the router.
Now that I think of it, I wonder if formatting the drive into a few partitions would have helped the router see it if there is a limitation on the size of the drive it can be connected to.
Anyway, at least for the time being I got the drive to work for what I needed via a different method. Thanks for the input and I do agree that the Netgear USB either doesn't support this or doesn't deliver all that I had hoped.

There are limits to the drives that Readyshare will see: 6TB may be getting there. But don't hold you breath in the hope that partitioning it would help. Past conversations here suggests that this doesn't help.
