How do I reset Readyshare to let me do this? Is the configuration somewhere within the router that does not get reset, or is Windows somehow updating it from some obscure registry setting?
You shouldn't need to mess around with anything. I have an R7800 with an ever changing roster if USB drives.
All I do is to go into USB Storage (Basic Settings) and Safely Remove USB Device.
Before going mad, I would check that the USB drives are compatible.
ReadySHARE USB Drives Compatibility List | Answer | NETGEAR Support
That list is hopelessly wrong and out of date.
For example there is no mention of the 8TB Seagate Backup Plus Drive that I use. The neat thing about that one is that it has two more USB ports that also work in ReadySHARE. So I have four USB drives on an R7800.
Is your drive in there?

Michael,
Drives are identical WD WEBWLG010HBK 10TB drives, not on the list; the one that has been attached since 2019 has worked perfectly for daily access for media with the occasional unplug/plug. If I unplug it, it recognizes it as soon as I plug it back in; similar for the older 8TB that I am trying to replace with the 10TB. I have done the "Safely remove USB device" several times, and that's been fine.
I need to isolate it from my PC in case that is causing the problem; maybe Windows is telling it what the mapped drives were. I will try it with a laptop attached and see what happens.

Sort of conforms that it will work. That detail was not in your first message.
...maybe Windows is telling it what the mapped drives were.
If in doubt, I always look in to Windows. But that you have two identical drives is odd. It won't be the old SMB issue.

I have gone through all the SMB fixes I could find online. The worst I would have expected is for it to get the drives confused e.g. if I only had the new one attached, it might think it was the old one.
So something somewhere is keeping the drive signatures and what the mappings are, but I expected that would be in ReadyShare itself and be cleared in the reset. Maybe it's all in the CFG file, but that's in hex so I can't tell. Otherwise, Windows seems like a likely candidate I suppose
