Those emails go out from time to time. There seems to be no logic in the timing.

Feed in your model number and check the documentation for your hardware.
That page will also have a library of firmware and drivers for your device.You can look for more recent firmware. You can even download a copy and install it yourself, which is a more reliable method than using an app and wifi.

One pretty reliable way to find out:
Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your model number, and look
for Downloads. (For older versions, under Firmware and Software
Downloads, look for "View Previous Versions".) Find the kit(s).
Download the kit(s) you want. Read the "Release Notes" file for
instructions. (In the User Manual, look for "firmware", and,
especially, for a topic like "Manually Upload Firmware to the Router".)
