R8000 2.4Ghz connection really slow, 5GHz super fast
Hello, I have a R8000 fully updated 1.0.3.4_1.1.2. The 2.4Ghz band is running at 600Mbps (according to the advanced netgear menu). I noticed on my wifi device that it would not losd webpages fast,...

Quick update, I got a Netgear 6400 (AC1750) for 120$ at Bestbuy, replaced the R8000 and all my devices on the 2.4Ghz WiFi are scoring best results than before and on my router GUI administration page it shows 450Mbps. The results are similar on the 5Ghz WiFi network.
Conclusion, the R8000 could be a great device, unfortunately is too buggy and the firmware is not stable enough.
If you don't have more then 12 people streaming at the same time in your 5Ghz, forget the triband routers, go for the dual band ones (AC1750 or AC1900), they are cheaper and most of the time offer the same speeds the standard WiFi devices support - plus the 2.4Ghz band works better and its more stable!

I followed your advice TheEther:
1. I enabled 20/40 MHz Coexistence for the 2.4GHz
2. Forced the max speeds to up 289Mbps
I tested with my Macbook pro (mid-2015) and the results from speedtest.net are: 46Mbps down and 33.20 up. On a second test 18Mbps down and 2Mbps up - so it varies.
If I switch to 5GHz the speeds bump up to 334Mbps and 33Mbps up. I can test many times as I want and 5GHz is very reliable on the results.
I understand that 5GHz WiFi networks are faster than 2.4GHz, but 64-QAM with 20MHz channel (that gives us up to 216Mpbs) half of it is at least 108Mbps, why am I getting up to 46Mbps ? The oscilation on the test results for the 2.4Ghz are extremelly high.
What is causing that degradation on the speed results for the 2.4GHz? I do have other neighbours, but I live in the country side, I can see 5 other WiFi networks, this is not a lot. Plus the R8000 is exactly at the middle of my house and all the testings are being done with distances up to 8 feet from the router.

Jun 17, 201620/40 coexistence does nothing.... until the mode is set to 600
check your Firmware and settings in the MAC's WIFI card. It may be set to b, g ........You need N to see Max speeds.
Bluetooth devices may impair 2.4 Check your home for other wireless devices which could be causing interference.
I know what WMM is called and saying be sure it's enabled is correct unless your from the deep deep deep south.
Lastly I beta tested the r8000 and found it to be a POS and prefer the r7000 over the r8000 which I received both for free.

Retired_Member,
If I set my R8000 to use up 600Mbps I have to check the 20/40 coexistence and network speeds are trash.
I did another test now:
1. disabled 20/40 on 2.4Ghz, set up to 289Mbps and tested again same results as before a range between 20-50Mbps down and 3-35Mbps up.
2. on the MAC's WiFi there is no manual configuration, I guess it sets to the best one avaialble automatically.
You are a luck man, testing things for free is cool. Unfortunately I paid for this POS and I'm stuck with it. Maybe the Netgear team could improve their firmware to make better use of their hardware.

Wishful thinking on the FW I liken them to our dumba$$ chicken and chief.... both, too ignorant to do the right thing.

Retired_Member,
What about dd-wrt for R8000? Do you think its better for 2.4Ghz and 5GHz? Would that be a better route than wait for Netgear to fix their firmware for the R8000?
