So if I purchased what was in the photo, all I’d need it the unit on the left (ONT) which would act as my modem..?- Chadm10Feb 23, 2021Tutor
As I understand it, the ONT serves as the modem with a FTTP (full fibre) connection. I wouldn't know about buying or fitting my own though - mine was already fitted in the house when I first moved in. I would think Openreach would need to come and wire it up and commission it before you could drop a router on the end of it, so I'm thinking your setup may be different to mine. Defo make sure you have a return option if you're going to buy anything off the back of this discussion :) And Openreach would probably only come out to do that if they had an order via an ISP for a new install in your property (in my case, Sky lease the existing full fibre line from BT to provide fibre services direct into the property). Other types of Sky 'Fibre' are different, whereby the fibre is only to the street cabinet or local exchange - in those cases, the connection into the home is via the standard BT phone socket, and that needs different equipment on the end of it. (Marketing definitions are very loose when it comes to advertising "fibre internet", so it can get confusing as to which type of fibre one has). Hope that helps!
