R8000P with ISP Static IP
Greetings! I am struggling to get my router working on my home network. I am trying to connect to an Arris modem and my ISP has given me a static IP. I currently use an old Apple Airport Ext...

Looks like it is solved.
I reset the router and let the "genie" do the setup. It saw the static IP and prompted me for the IP, subnet, gateway, and DNS. Once entered it sprang to life.
Thanks to everyone who chimed it!!!

Thank you for the reply.
The R8000P firmare is the latest. I don't have the number before me as the unit is disconnected at the moment, but I did check that it was.
The ISP provider is Spectum Communications (formerly Brighthouse) and the modem is Arris model DG1670.
Ye, I did inform Netgear help-desk that I was using a static IP and they guided me to the setup, which seems pretty straight forward.
Withou spilling the beans on the specific numbers, my provider gave me:
IP address 2x.xxx.xxx.xx4 <== my static IP
Subnet Mask 255.xxx.xxx.xx2
Default Gateway 2x.xxx.xxx.xx3 <== The Apple calls this the router address and I believe it is the IP address of teh Arris modem.
DNS Severs 75.xxx.xxx.1
75.xxx.xxx.2
The router mode is DHP & NAT not sure about the modem settings.
I will contact my ISP and see if they need something that I don't know or have suggestions (i.e., MAC address of the new router). This may take a day or two as we are fighting fires at work and long hours make getting my router working difficult.
Thanks again.

One of these?

That looks like a modem/router. See all those LAN ports on the back?
Two routers on your network can cause headaches. For example, you can end up with local address problems. Among other things, the other router can misdirect addresses that the Netgear router usually handles, such as routerlogin.net or the usual IP address for a router, 192.168.1.1.
This explains some of the other drawbacks.

To avoid that, you have two quick options. Put the DG1670 into "bridge" (modem only) mode, or use the R8000P as a wireless access point.
I would sort that out before worrying about the settings for the internet service.

Ah! This community is helpful. Learning a little of what bridge mode means.
That makes sense about the router/modem conundrum. Before I bought the R8000P I had the Spectrum tech out to fix a different issue. I had also asked that he open specific ports for me on the modem, but suggested that he should disable the Arris internal router instead. That was what he was supposed to have done, but maybe it didn't get done or didn't get set up correctly.
I'll contact Spectrum and have them confirm the modem's settings.
I appreciate the education here.

As always, an actual version number would be more useful than your
opinion of what's "the latest", today.> [...] the modem is Arris model DG1670.
So, not a modem, but a modem+router ("gateway").

That'd all be more useful if you revealed "a.b" out of "a.b.c.d". A
couple of digits is much less helpful. No reason at all to hide any of
a subnet mask.
If the DG1670 is acting as a (NAT) router, and you configured the
WAN/Internet interface of your R8000P with the same IP parameters as the
DG1670 is using on its WAN/Internet interface, then any communication
between the R8000P and the outside world would be impossible.> IP address 2x.xxx.xxx.xx4 <== my static IP

> address and I believe it is the IP address of teh Arris modem. Are all those "x...x" things the same? That lower octet (".d") might
be useful info, too. Did you get a _block_ of addresses from your ISP,
or a _single_ address? You're discarding too much useful info for
secrecy. What your provider _actually_ gave you, and actual settings
from the DG1670 might be required info. Consider sending a private
message with _all_ the details.

giving you a block of public addresses instead of a singe address, then
things get more complicated and/or unusual.)- Loren00Jan 22, 2020Aspirant
Firmware is V1.4.1.30_1.2.26
The modem/router is set to bridge mode. I confirmed that with Spectrum. The Spectrum agent reset and reconfigured modem in bridge mode just to be sure nothing was amiss.
Using one of my Macs directly wired to the Arris modem (modem in bridge mode) I was able to access the internet with the computer configured as a static IP.

> router's WAN/Internet interface? No, they did not tell me how to configure my router one way or another. I don't think DHCP works, at least it hasn't when I tried setting it that mode on the router or the PC. The Airport Extreme is set up as "Static" and so I did the same with the R8000P.
So, the Static IP is 24.227.xxx.xx4 (where x is a number from 0 to 9)
The default gateway is 24.227.xxx.xx3 (router/modem address)
The subnet is 255.255.255.252
If you want/need specifics I can email them.
My ISP has a block of static IPs reservd for me. I am only using the one, but I don't know/understand how that might affect the setup for the Netgear router. Furthermore, I don't understand why the Airport Extreme or the Mac computer have no issues working directly with the Arris modem using the static IP parameters above.
Also, Nighthawk does not recognize the internet, yet the internet LED on the machine is white whereas the home screen in the "Netgear Genie" progam says the internet port is not connected.
