R8000P|NightHawk X6S AC4000 Smart WiFi Router lower network speeds than WNDR4500v1

R8000P|NightHawk X6S AC4000 Smart WiFi Router

Firmware: 1.1.3.2_1.1.74

I just purchased a R8000P router to replace my aging WNDR4500(v1) butam finding that in the master bedroom, even though signal strength is still showing as full strength, i am getting really low data speeds. especially on the 5Ghz bands. last time i checked, I was only getting 0.04MBps. this is far lower than what i was getting from my old router on the 5Ghz network.I have tried reflashing and reseting to factory, as well as just reseting to factory. for a while speeds were good, but the degraded over time. the 5Ghz band is almost empty, with only one other network besides the two signals coming from the router. I am unsure as to why this slowdown is ocuring. All other locations in the house seem to be getting good speeds from the router.

In case theres anyone curious as to why i would stop using the older better performing router, there was an issue where every couple of hourse the entire network wold slow down te less than 1mbps (both up and down) and the router would require a reboot to return speeds to normal. this started occuring about 1 year ago, and i got tired of the issue.

fyi: my internet is ADSL 6MBPS up and 1Mbps down.

I realize that both routers capability outstrips my internet connection. so please dont make any comments in that area. I live in a area where 6MBps is the fastest i can get. (although one street down they have upto 15MBps from the same ISP as well as digital cable....) If i could get faster internet, I would.

  • think i found the solution. i loweredthe modes the router was transmitting at. so instead of 1+ghz, i changed it to 300Mbps. this still far outstrips my internet connection, so i should be good. I tested the network link speed, and although it was still slower than it should have been, at 86Mbps, it was still faster than my iSP connection. Netflix and Hulu are able to stream at 480 and 720 with out issues now. any one who wants to comment on why lowering the data rate fixed the issue, please chime in.
