What FW is loaded on the router?
What browser are you using? Try MS Edge or Firefox or Opera
Be sure to clear out all browser caches before entering into the routers web page.

Hi again,
The fw is v1.0.2.144, the latest is 1.0.2.160.
i've tried logging in with firefox and microsoft edge.
i'm using my laptop the default gateway is 192.168.1.1 hard wired to router.
when using edge, not connected to internet, it comes up with netgear nighthawk r8500 in upper left corner, the fw in upper right v1.0.2.144 and in the middle 3 little clouds, like thought bubbles saying www.routerlogin.net refused to connect. when i connect to internet using wifi thru the linksys router with laptop wired to r8500 i get the same.
when using firefox whether connected to net or not using 192.168.1.1 or routerlogin.net it comes up unable to connect.
have these routers been known to slowly bite the dust to the point of unable to login?

Try a 30-30-30 reset...

tried the 30-30-30, when i try logging in, firefox or edge, with 192.168.1.1 it comes up with netgear logo and 404 error not found, moved etc.
however i'm able to ping it using 192.168.1.1, it will send 4 pings and will receive 4 pings no fails.
do routers sometime start going intermittent then lock up on internet traffic but i can still ping?

Might try a TFTP to reload FW on it:
https://kb.netgear.com/000059634/How-to-upload-firmware-to-a-NETGEAR-router-using-Windows-TFTP
Need to press the reset button for 30 seconds then release, then it send to PUT the command and upload the FW.
Make sure you enable tftp: https://www.thewindowsclub.com/enable-tftp-windows-10
Video walk through using a tftp client. Use the built in one for windows 10 though. the video is more of an example of how its done:

Mac TFTP: https://www.petenetlive.com/KB/Article/0001247
Try nmrpflash:
https://github.com/jclehner/nmrpflashIf any of this fails, I would presume the router is toast and needs to be replaced.
