Windows 10 64 bit upgraded from Windows 7 64 bit. Currently on V1.0.5.18 because firmware became corrupted and let sit for months before attempting to fix. Now it's working but can't update firmware...

No, it wouldn't. Did you try reading the instructions before
assuming that you knew how to do this?
Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your model number, and look
for Downloads. (For older versions, under Firmware and Software
Downloads, look for "View Previous Versions".) Find the kit(s).
Download the kit(s) you want. Read the "Release Notes" file for
instructions. (In the User Manual, look for "firmware", and,
especially, for a topic like "Manually Upload Firmware to the Router".)
When that fails because of a deficient User Manual, try:

Assuming I'm assuming something makes you more than an ass. Go **bleep** yourself.

If I had been assuming anything, then I wouldn't have asked.
You're welcome.

Neither on your previous WIndows version nor on Windows 10 you ever had to or have to double click and mount whatever image. No word of this in the fine documentation, nor in the generic KB entry fellow antinode referred to for firmware updates before.
Both the direct download from nor the download link in the (as of writing) current firmware R9000 Firmware Version 1.0.5.28 does provide a zip archive, which can be accessed and unpacked in a standard Windows 10 Explorer without any additional tools. As a result, you get two files: R9000-V1.0.5.28.img and R9000-V1.0.5.28_Release_Notes.html
The .img file can be uploaded to the R9000 using the firmware update process (hint: Web browser), or the tftp recovery process (-> How to upload firmware to a NETGEAR router using Windows TFTP - hint tftp command) if the R9000 does not want to boot anymore.

Obviously I wasn't detailed enough in my original post about ALL the steps I took since both of you retards are explaining steps I knew about or had already gone through in downloading the latest firmware. In fact the previous **bleep** muncher wasted his time and mine in explaining steps I had previously gone through because he wasn't smart enough to realize that for himself.
I'm sorry I was thorough enough to add the detail of double clicking the file since both you morons focused on it needlessly. But since it produced the same error as the other methods used I saw no reason to not include it. Stupidity on my part.
As for the rest of your reply it's on me for being in such a state lately that I couldn't remember 5 minutes ago to have typed that I tried everything you wasted your time typing.
However instead of just assuming I don't know what I'm doing why didn't either of you asstards ask questions to narrow down the variables that needed to be known?
This is what happens when a company has such a pathetic support system and relies on "guru"'s to do the job for them
Both of of you can piss off.
Anyone else decideds to reply after this comment of mine they can be added to the group to dumb to breathe for themselves because I'm done with this.
**bleep** you all.

That's "too dumb to breathe". But thanks for the entertainment.
