Nope, I am not using openDNS or parental controls. I'm getting the primary and secondary DNS from my ISP. In testing, I tried google's openDNS of 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4. It did not change the issue and is router related.
I have yet tried to downgrade the firmware but I did get the update before the Jan 5th one to try it.

The error message that you are getting in your mail software normally means that one of your devices is infected and sending SPAM. Did you already ran a security scan on your devices?

If I turn off WiFi on my phone (disconnecting to my network) the email goes through and I do not get the message.
So you do confirm that when you remove the router and let WiFi activated on the phone you can still sending mails. English isn't my motherlanguage so I want to make clear that I understood you correctly. You should also contact Netgear.
You can find the firmware upgrades also on the website: https://www.netgear.com/support/download/?model=R6400
You need to click to expand to show all previous upgrades.
