ReadySHARE works with most standard file formats. Any encryption is down to whatever software you use to move data between devices.
. Looks like I need to look into a replacement for my 5 year old router...I doubt if that will do much to change matters. Netgear doesn't seem to have changed the basic operation of USB operations. If anything it is removing USB from some newer devices., his has been a big complaint among Orbi users. They originally had a useless USB port. Now even that has gone.

Thanks as well for the heads-up on the SMBv1 vulnerability issue. That might explain why I had intermittent problems accessing the drive. Looks like I need to look into a replacement for my 5 year old router...
