Not that "suddenly". That firmware is more than three months old.
I recall a few issues reported here.

It isn't easy to interpret Netgear's release notes. (Nothing new there.) But given the way that Apple does things, it may be that Netgear has removed something that Apple no longer supports.
Remember, installing new firmware isn't a one-way process. If you find that it does break things you can always roll back.
