replacing non-Negear router with app for Model Number R7960P
I have just purchased and am thrilled with the install of the Model Number R7960P Nighthawk router. The best feature was I could rename it with my old SSID and password and it found that network and I...

if you set the same SSID and password used on the old, non-NG router on the new NG router, it should work
Do not use crappy apps. Use the WebGUI at http://192.168.1.1 - especially if you need to do firmware upgrades. Also use wired connection for upgrading

Will the Nighthawk app on the iPhone work when setting up a replacement Netgear account on a Windows 7 computer?

Do as microchip8 said. Do not use the apps unless you are into pain and suffering.
With the PC open a browser window and go to 192.168.1.1 and you can log into the router and do the config from there. Don't use the app should you install it somewhere to update the firmware unless you want to risk bricking the router. I also suggest you turn auto update of the firmware off as the auto update process can also cause major issues including bricks.

very disappointed not to use the app..I used it for my W10 replacement install and loved it so I had my friend with W7 but this router..now I m not comfortable doing it directly from the web 192.168.1.1..as the app automatically found all my devices without needing to reenter or change any name or password.. Guess this is not going to work for them

what names/passwords are you talking about? if you use the same SSID and password on the NG router, your devices should not need to be re-configured. You can still use the app, just don't use it for critical firmware updates and don't use WiFi either to do updates
