A cheap laptop/usb fan might be an ideal solution before just drilling holes in it. I've seen a few people get enthusiastic with their drilling and hit the motherboard and wreck it. Plus the router has a usb port that can power the fan.

You're not going to get a response from netgear as this is the public support community.
If the device is still in warranty, you could check on an RMA.
Or use the fan option.
You might have just been anfortunate and gotten a device with a cpu the runs hot.
