Settings File Compatibility
I keep my firmware up-to-date and always save a copy of the latest settings file. Is this file compatible with some or all newer Nighthawk models? In other words, can it be used to initialize a newer...

As a retired IT guy, I'm totally astonished at the inability to standardize the settings. It should be a simple matter to save them (in a separate file if necessary) in a format that can be used by all NETGEAR routers manufactured in the past "n" years (where "n" is decided based on router compatibility). What is the hangup against doing so? If y'all can't do it, contract its design out to me....

That maybe all good and such however due to the fact that there are many different model routers, based on different chip sets and have different features, using same configurations across all models is not possible. NG has different models and different HW and such that distingushes there products from each other and other Mfrs. Wouldn't be good business practive if they did all the same thing across everything.
Good Luck.

Your no-can-do statement should be revised as follows: "Wouldn't be good business practive if they COULD NOT STANDARDIZE SETTINGS across everything."
A little digging revealed an Administration "Backup Settings" feature that provides for backup/restore of settings. So it CAN be done, it's just a matter of whether settings backup files are compatible between NETGEAR router models. If not, the company, in my opinion, is incompetent because all that's required is a comma-delimited file embedded in a secure file in the following format: "SETTING-NAME, VALUE". For example: "Password, mypw". If a parameter name is not supported by a specific model, the restore simply skips it.

The backup restore is for saved config files from with in the router model only. But you knew that. Well standarization of features and config files is a nice thought. However since you don't seem to understand what goes on behind the scenes on networking HW and all the differences and such. Theres way more that goes into FW that you realize. Trying to apply one standard across all models just would not work and would be extremely time consuming from a development and testing stand point and also support and troubleshooting stand point. You don't see engine tuning programs being appied for all cars and engines since there are many different engines and features in cars. I'm sure that maybe if you phone contact NG support, they maybe receptive to your ideas. You'll have to discuss that with them as this would need to be reviewed by NG engineering, not in the forums as the forums wouldn't be able to make such changes.
This isn't a solution, only an idea.
Good Luck though. :smileylol:
