Strange call from someone saying they are from NetGear

I purchased/installed a Nighthawk X6 router approx. 6 months ago. Yesterday, I installed an AC2200 mesh extender.  Everything works fine. Today I got a call from someone who said they wanted me to go to a my computer and they would help me connect to their server to complete a software upgrade without which my router and extender would stop working in the future.  He wasa very difficult to understand - heavy mid eastern dialect.  I informed him I was not comfortable with 'just taking a call and connecting to anything' and would contact NetGear customer service directly.  He then hung up.  

Does anyone know if a software upgrade is really required?
