The best people to answer that are the VPN makers. They know if you need custom firmware (some do) or how you need to configure a router. If it does need firmware, then Netgear can't, or won't help you.
The AP mode suggestion may be there because you don't want to have two routers on your network. But AP mode kills features that may get in the way of VPN operation:

Do you mean IPVanish? Neither IPVannish nor IP Vannish (see above) seem to exist.

Possibly workable as a firmware install for your main router. Doubtful for a device configured as an access point.
