Usb hub with 2 external hdd

I have two external HDDs that I want to connect to my router. They are both from old computers that I no longer have that I put in external powered enclosures. I want to be able to connect them at the same time but I'm wondering if this will work with a USB hub. I know I can use one of those external to drive docking stations to do this but I would like to save money and just use a hub. Will the router recognize both drives if I use a hub?

Also should I use a self-powered USB hub or is one that doesn't require external power okay?
