How did you contact support?
The bit about being asked to pay for support may be a scam.
If you called a number that you found with a web search, that almost certainly had nothing to do with Netgear.
Netgear itself does not provide paid for support. It does that through GearHead Technical Support.
Web searches can deliver results that scream "Netgear support" at the top but that turn out to be anything but. Using them can be dangerous, for your network and your bank balance.
If you login to mynetgear, can you see your router there?
If so, that is where to ask for support. If that is what you did, then the warranty process is different.

Is this really the procedure for replacing a unit 88 days old?
No. Start the RMA process by checking MyNetgear.

Warranties are at least a year.

I was on NG site and created a case number that gave me the phone number I called. I did not (as I was warned not to) go to any internet site help. Thank you for the link to the Warrantee. As I feared, I will be without internet during the process and do have to return at my expence.

You could try returning it to your supplier.
Or see if you can get help here. It may be better than the official support team.

I have posted my issue on another question but for those that may be following this post, I will copy my information and problem here...
My original problem was that the Nighthawk router R7960P would not update from Version 1.4.1.44 to the new version 1.4.1.50 that was released a couple weeks ago. Long story short, I have tried 15-20 times..wired connection, unwired, antivirus off, all devices disconnected except the wired pc, downloading an older version (not take either) etc. I followed the steps to download the update, and browse to that file and upload and install..it says it installs and reboots the router all nicely in about 3 minutes but the version number does not change to the newer version but odly the GUI version does update to the new version number (no idea what GUI is).
I have a HP laptop, W10 and love how easy this router installed and trippled my internet speeds. I just thought it would be advisable to upgrade the Firmware before my 90 day phone support ended. Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated..I am 75 years old and can get around my laptop but not by any means an expert in this kind of thing.
