WiFi Router + Extender vs Orbi Mesh Wifi

Follow up to previous post as I forgot to include.
If I were to upgrade to an AX or Wifi 6 router which did not also function as a VDSL2 compatible modem, or to an Orbi All Of Home Mesh WiFi system, will I need a modem from the ISP? It's a TG789. And if not it, which Netgear modem would be best to before either an AX Wifi 6 or Orbi router?
